다가구, 계단실, 집밥냄새
어렸을 적, 친구들과 놀다 집으로 돌아가는 길이면 동네는 저마다의 저녁 냄새로 가득했습니다.
김치찌개, 카레 냄새를 맡다보면 집으로 가는 발걸음이 가벼워졌습니다. 오늘은 무슨반찬이 나올까 기대되기도 했고요.

아들가족과 어머니가 함께 사는 다가구주택입니다.
보통의 다가구주택 계단실은 타인을 마주칠까 조심스러워지는 공간이고, 채광도 부족하고 환기도 잘 안됩니다.
옆집에 사는 사람이 가족이라면, 계단실은 좀더 느슨한 공간이 되어도 좋겠습니다.
혹은 계단실이 좀더 느슨한 공간이라면, 옆집에 사는 사람과 가까워질수도 있겠습니다.

집으로 가는길에 집밥냄새가 나면 좋겠어서 어머니세대의 주방을 계단실에 면하도록 계획했습니다.
계단실에는 공원을 면한 큰 채광창과 환기창도 있습니다.
비오는날에 빗소리를 들으며 온가족이 계단실에 앉아 부침개를 먹을수 있길 기대합니다.
Multi-Family House, Stair hall, and the Smell of Home Cooking
When I was a child, the walk home after playing with friends was always filled with the smells of dinner drifting through the neighborhood. The aroma of kimchi stew or curry made every step home feel lighter. It also made me wonder what would be waiting on the dinner table that evening.

This is a multi-family house designed for a son’s family and his mother to live together.
In most multi-family houses, the stair hall is merely a circulation space. It often lacks daylight and natural ventilation, and can feel awkward because of the possibility of encountering neighbors.
But if the people living next door are your own family, perhaps the stair hall can become a more relaxed and generous space. Or perhaps, by making the stair hall more relaxed, the relationship between neighbors can become closer as well.

With the hope that the smell of home-cooked meals would welcome people on their way home, the kitchen of the mother's unit was positioned to open toward the stair hall.
The stair hall is also provided with large windows facing the park, bringing in daylight and natural ventilation.
I imagine the entire family sitting together in the stair hall on a rainy day, listening to the sound of rain while sharing freshly made Korean pancakes.
